Meet Fr. Michael Shields, who came to our Assembly on Monday 09/08/14. Fr. Michael is from Alaska and the founder of the Brothers of the Heart of Jesus community in Magadan, Russia. The Church of the Nativity was built largely through his efforts. He followed a calling in 1994 specifically to care for those who had suffered in the gulag.

Gulag inmates were only identified by numbers that were then attached to gulag uniform.

Fr. Michael was a fascinating story teller. His enthusiasm and faith were absolutely infectious.

A female inmate in the Magadan gulag made this rosary made from bread and ash. Her catholic faith and the praying of the rosary helped her survive
