Knitting Hats for Babies in Russia 

"I originally started making newborn hats for my local hospital.

I wanted to learn to loom knit and I love to be creative.

This was an opportunity to combine the things that I love with a service project. Seva (a Punjabi term for a work of service) is an important part of me. 

I have been to India and have seen the poverty there.

My thought was that, maybe, Russia was the same way.

I've heard Father Mike's stories about Russia and the people there.

When I heard that father Mike was coming to Alaska, I started right away in making hats.

I felt there was a great need and it would be cool to think that babies in Russia would be wearing my hats.

I told myself that no matter what happened, knitting hats was a good idea, even if Father Mike had no room in his suit case.

I would just have more hats to take to India with me when I go back on my next trip. 

It takes my about 1 hour to make a newborn hat and two hours to make a small toddler hat.

So, in the time of about one movie, I can get two to three hats done."

At 14 years old, Gurpreet Singh sits with Fr. Mike while knitting hats for our missions babies.

Sofia Cordero (12 years old) knits hats for the Mission to Magadan. “
