Faith Stories. Catholic Parish

“Olga
(named
changed by permission)
When did
it all begin? This was the question I asked
myself. At first alcohol was entertainment for me: it made me fearless and
daring. Normally I am a very restrained person, but when I had a glass of wine,
I feel myself free to speak my opinions. And at that time the alcohol
acted as a stimulant bringing joy and a feeling of happiness. But soon I
was drinking for other reasons just to calm myself.
And then it got
worse. I began to lose relationships and felt so terrible. I told myself
‘I’ll never drink again’, but after several months I always found myself with a
glass in my hand. I never wanted to get drunk, but after two or three glassed I
couldn’t stop. The power of alcohol was so great, that I did some terrible
things.
But what could I do? How
could I stop? What was it? Was it an illness? I sought treatment, but the
hospital didn’t help me. Where could I seek support? Who would help me? After a
real hard drinking bout I
turned to Jesus. “Help me Jesus! No one but you can help me. I’ve lost everything. I’m still alive,
but I don’t want to live like this. Help me!!!”
A strange power filled me
from top to bottom. I couldn’t understand what happened to me and was afraid. I
felt some sort of presence nearby, and found the boldness to ask ‘Who are you?’ I received the answer; ‘your friend.’ And from that very moment, my life
changed. I didn’t seek salvation in alcohol anymore. I found new friends, my
life became transformed. One
friend led me to the Nativity of Jesus Catholic Parish and what a joy to find
my home here.
I attend church with joy. Now
I know that even when I suffer, Jesus will always be close. He sees everything,
helps in any situation, and gives all that we need. And all because I opened to
him and He is there in prayer, in sacrament in His church.
Nothing is more beautiful
than to live in Jesus, who
is the life, the way and the truth. Even in suffering there is comfort, and He will love you
forever no matter what. He is the one who will never turn from you or betrays
you and the one who will always help in difficult times... With peace and love in Jesus”
