In Spirit and Truth
(Thursday, September 10)
“…But when the fullness of time had come, God
sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who
were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because
you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying,
“Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then
also an heir, through God.” (Gal 4: 4-7)
This passage from Galatians happens to be part of the
epistle-reading for today, according to my Church’s liturgical calendar. I am
overwhelmed, as usual, by the very elevated, complicated Truth that I am called
to contemplate and internalize, as a hearer/reader of Scripture, on a daily
basis. This is no watered-down theology. Here the Apostle takes me through the
very essence of Salvation History, reminding me of what it’s all about: It’s about the Spirit of God’s Son being sent into my heart,
making me His child.
Let me cry out to Him today, not as a slave to custom or
law, but in the Spirit and Truth of His Son: “Abba! Father! Who art in heaven…”
I am reminded today that all the texts, customs, and pious practices of my
Church-Tradition are not there to make me a “slave” or robot of external
motions. I am called to internalize them in my heart, in the Spirit of His Son.
Without Him, without His Spirit, my external piety is but another form of
slavery. Let me be free today, crying out in Spirit and Truth. Because, as
Jesus says to the Samaritan woman, “true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for
the Father seeks such as these to worship Him.” (Jn 4: 23)
