The icon of the Mother of God “Seeking of
the Lost”

People who were in the face of mortal danger resorted to
prayers before this icon.
The miracle-working icon of the Mother of God “Seeking of the
Lost”, which was in the Church of the Nativity in Palashi (Moscow ) is also famous.
The icon from Bor is noted for its large size:

miraculous saving of the peasant form Kaluga
province happened on Christmas Day.
In Russia , this icon became famous in the middle of the seventeenth
century when a peasant from the Kaluga province, Fedot
Obukhov who lost his way in a winter snowstorm, beseeched in for help and
promised to present the parish church a copy of the icon of the Mother of God
“Seeking of the Lost”.
In a miraculous way, his sled appeared at a
neighboring village and his life was saved.
The icon was painted, placed in the church of
the village Bor in the Kaluga
province and became famous for its numerous miracles.
For example, on taking the icon to the city Serpukhov and praying
before it an outbreak of cholera was stopped there.
The
first time an icon of this name was mentioned was in the sixth century during
the reign of Emperor Justinian.
In the small city, Adan,
in Asia Minor a fervent prayer before this
icon helped a sinful monk to repent and be saved from eternal death.
One of the meanings of the Slavic verb “vsiskati”
(seeking) is to take care, to be in charge of somebody.
The Seeking for the Lost in God’s concern,
worry for people who are on the threshold of spiritual death.
The Infant Christ is standing on the Virgin’
knee.
The pacing movement of His naked legs
symbolizes the Incarnation of God, the uniting of heavenly and earthly things.
It emphasizes the fact that
God takes care of the world, came into the world to save sinners and this also
happens by means of the Virgin’s intercession.
